General Instructions for Using Netscape Composer
|
| 1. Start Netscape |
| 2. Under "File", open a "new page" in Composer,
and play around with Page Colors and Format (PC’s) or Page Format (Mac)
to try out different color combinations. |
| 3. It is easiest to make things stay in the position
you intend if you put all text in Tables. Use separate tables for each
item or group of items that you want lined up vertically on the page. For
example, use a separate table for the Title, one for any Text you choose
to put on the page, any pictures that stretch the width of the page, and
a separate table with your "navigation buttons" in them. Make 2 column
tables for text where you want a picture to the side of the text. Leave
the 1 pixel border around tables for now. Later you can remove them if
you want, but the cell walls are then not visible, so it is hard to get
things into the correct cells while you are in the editing process. Once
you have a format you like, you can save the page as anything you want,
as long as it is a single word, all lowercase letters, and followed by
the .html code. |
| 4. Netscape offers a simple to use "help" section. Open
Help from the menu, then click on "Creating Web Pages". You may wish to
print out this section for referral. |
| 5. Periodically, save your page, then open the page in
Navigator (instead of Composer) so you can see how it will look to a Web
browser. You should also occasionally open the page in Internet Explorer,
since pages sometimes look different depending on the browser used. |
| 6. Later, you will use File Transfer Protocol (ftp) to
transfer all your files to a web based file, but for now just save them
on your floppy disk. When your portfolio is complete, you may wish to "burn"
it onto a CD-ROM. |
